A hidden gem in a crowded field?
Sun Optics USA is a great little company which I first was introduced to while looking for adjustable mounts for my QB78. They have had somewhat of a niche reputation in the past, providing a number of specialty mounts, rings and tools. They are a very Airgun friendly company, providing everything from PCP Pumps to spring compressors and mounting adapters. They have grown their lineup of Sun Optics branded scopes over the past few years, and with a “No questions asked” Lifetime Warranty, their optics are worth checking out. Special thanks to Trenier Outdoors for giving us the opportunity to take a look at this interesting scope.
Clear, Crisp optical clarity and responsive side focus
The Sun Optics Ultra Variable 5-30×56 Mil-Dot Rifle Scope surprised me. Having used a number of other rifle scopes in the same price range, I was very impressed with the attention to details on this one. Available online for around $450USD, it is meant to compete with the Hawke Sidewinder, Optisan EVX and the MTC Pro series of scopes, all of which are known for their clarity and quality. With an etched mil-dot reticle, clear glass, and parallax down to 10 yards (I was able to focus down to right around 8 yards with the one I tested), the scope is a good choice for those wanting to reach out a little further than the other offerings from competitors in this price range.
The Sun Optics scope came with an impressive matte finish, quality machining and an overall quality feel to it.
Ranging and the like with the side focus knob was very precise, and having the ability to zoom in all the way to 30x was a great help in really being able to dial in the specific yardage to target, something those into Field Target or pest control will appreciate for certain. The one potential weakness of this scope I found was in the low profile turrets. For some, this is a deal breaker as their shooting needs demand easy to adjust turrets. For my shooting situations, Hunter Field Target, Small Game hunting, pest control and target shooting, I actually lean towards the low profile turrets where possible.

Reticle and final thoughts
The reticle used on the Sun Optics Ultra Variable 5-30×56 Mil-Dot Rifle Scope is a basic, straight forward mil-dot reticle with red and green illumination available. If anything, the simplicity if this reticle may be the biggest flaw this scope has to offer. Sun Optics has a more advanced Mil-Dot reticle on their First Focal plane scope line, and I hope they are able to incorporate that reticle style into an updated version of this scope in the future.
